A Story That Started With Wonder

Our story begins with our founder, Minya Oh.

While living in New York, Minya was drawn to the magic of FAO Schwarz—a place where toys sparked curiosity, imagination, and wonder. She loved the feeling that every product had a purpose: to inspire children, encourage creativity, and create memorable moments.

When she later moved to Chicago, she noticed something was missing. Stores had inventory, but not the same level of quality, thoughtfulness, or personal care she had experienced in New York.

Originally planning to open a dress shop in Hyde Park, Minya was met with an unexpected realization: the neighborhood needed a toy store. She trusted her instincts, embraced the opportunity, and in 1978 opened her first Galt Toys location.

From traveling to England to bring Galt Toys to Chicago, to personally sourcing products from international toy fairs, Minya built the foundation of Galt around one simple belief: children deserve toys that are thoughtfully designed, educational, high-quality, and made to last.

That same philosophy continues to guide everything we do today.
